   Visceral. Vacillating. Variegated.
If I could alliterate the art of Pablo Picasso anymore vexatiously sorry . . .

I don’t pretend to know anything of art, or whether I appreciate it as much as I should, or even if likening afternoon’s of ‘Rocko’s Modern Life’ provides any justice to Picasso’s work. But I will attempt to give an impression of my visit to the Picasso:masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris, currently on display at the NSW Art Gallery.

While not my favourite artist, Picasso’s incredibly transient approach to art has honed some of the best examples of expressionist, cubist, and surrealist works, the vestiges of a chaotic and often monochromatic 20th Century.

My museum musings began with the familiar audience of the art scene, foisting their Wikipedia analogies of Picasso’s “expression”, his “form” and such about each painting, that instantly put to shame my lack of prior knowledge. Although silenced by this I was still able to move through each room, beginning with the so-called “blue” period and culminating with his more colourful expressions and sculptures that harked back to Picasso’s earlier cubist works.

Never staying long in each room but long enough to take a unique interest in each piece, a friend and amazing art gallery goer, Ms. T, “pointed out Picasso’s laziness fastidiousness with hands, exclaiming, “he still can’t paint hands” (I like to think this was a big Fuck You to society and its pedantic pursuit for perfection).

Though, what I was more interested in was his experimentation of art, transitioning from the rigid classicist approach to a modern pastiche of sardonic styles. Picasso’s ability to cover swathes of art style even co-founding new genres is spectacular, indicating the boundless propensity for artists to change and shake things up rather than evolve in some Darwinian vacuum. What gives Picasso’s plethora of artworks more breadth than his contemporaries is the clear investment of consciousness, adaptive with change, and never set in the stone of a single period.

To view some 150 paintings, sculptures, and drawings that Picasso insisted he couldn’t relinquish (“Picasso’s Picassos), then get a ticket and head down to the NSW Art Gallery at The Domain.
